Research for AR2301 - Project 1 Vulpes and Vulpes - a boutique publishing house 1. Two audiences: a) Scholars interested in high-quality work with lots of footnotes. The works have to be insightful or useful. b) Intelligent lay readers interested in informative and interesting non-fiction. 2. They are a small boutique book publishing company. The conceit is that they are run by two red foxes (hence the name), Fred Fox, the Red Fox, and Foxxy. Said foxes look at humans (aka bipeds) with a mix of fondness and superiority; they are sure that foxes do things much better than humans although they are now willing to admit that human inventions like doors and windows are pretty good. Their goals are to publish material for other foxes that is informative, interesting and/or scholarly. This started as a way for my partner to amuse and inform her daughter. “Foxxy” is the mother fox, her late husband had “Daddy Fox” and the daughter was “Baby Fox” (now “Blue Fox” as she’s 26 yo!). When I got involved with my partner, I introduced “Fred Fox, the Red Fox.” Foxxy had already published “The Complete History of Vole Hunting” through another publisher but when Fred wanted to publish a book, Vulpes and Vulpes was founded. Fred has since published several books in the “Foibles of the Bipeds” series (“Speech Figures, Lip Mashing, and other Foibles of the Bipeds”) 3. Other publishers o BenBella books seems the closest to V&V’s philosophy, at least as far as type of publisher. o Graywolf is closest in name and logo. o Curbside Splendor has the best web site o Tin House has a “magazine” style website 4.
